1. Price vs. Quality

   Invest in quality paint for good coverage and long-lasting finishing look. Today, high quality paints color-fast with a guarantee to last many years. Cheap is always expensive. Don’t be tempted to buy cheap paint as you’ll end up spending more in the long run.

2. Prevailing Weather Conditions

   When it comes to painting, you can’t just wake up one morning and decide to paint your home. Plan first and select a day when the weather is conducive for that. Since paint dries properly on a dry surface, plan to give your house a new exterior look in a dry season when humidity is low and there’s barely any rain.

3. Siding Material and Wood

   Siding materials and wood deteriorate with time (rot) hence painting them is a waste of time and resources. Replace them with stronger materials if possible. Otherwise, if the wood covers small areas, apply a wood hardener as an undercoat. Next, apply an exterior filler (meant for wood) for a matching look. Before you begin painting, sand the surfaces for a smooth painting surface.

4. Sand the Exterior Surfaces and Wash

   Trim and siding materials should have smooth surfaces to absorb paint properly. Clean the surfaces then sand and wash them before painting. Let the surfaces dry before you begin painting. Any surfaces with peeling paint must be scraped off and sanded to unleash the perfect painting surface.

5. Apply a Coat of Primer

   Apply a coat of primer on the exterior surfaces of your home to be painted followed by sanding, and finally painting. However, modern paints come pre-combined with primers to minimize the number of coats to be applied.

6. Paint Downwards

   Paint downwards, from the top to bottom, to minimize streaks. This is possible because painting the other way round, from bottom to top, works against gravity. Painting downwards, no paint drips to mess up the surfaces you’ve already worked on.

7. Use a Large Container for All Your Paints

   Add all paints of the same color to use on the exterior of your house in a large container. Mix them well to ensure that your home ends up with a uniform exterior color. Known as paint boxing, this technique is popular amongst professional painters. It comes in handy when you bought paint at different times or from different vendors.

8. Seal Paint Containers

   When done for the day, seal all the containers with paint to prevent them from drying out. Lightly hammer the paint containers’ lid with a rubber mallet to shut them properly. Placing a film of plastic wrap over the paint containers’ opening before placing the lid can also give a tight seal.

9. Cover the Landscape

   Cover everything in your landscape that falls beneath your painting zone with drop cloths to protect them from paint stains.

10. Hire a Professional Painter
